Harrogate Speakability Self-Help Group

We are a good team, and joining “Speakability” has opened up much more for both of us. Muriel’s speech is so much better since joining and we are able to “do” and “learn” so many different things..
I am now a volunteer for “Speakability”, which I so enjoy, and I am also a volunteer for Dysphasic Support (part of The Stroke Association) of which Muriel is also a member. Since she became part of these groups, Muriel is so much more outgoing and long may it continue.

I had my stroke while on holiday in Tenerife in 2003. I didn’t know anything about it until I got to Harrogate Hospital three weeks later. I was in hospital for five months; I had six sessions of physio and speech four months after I got home but was left in a wheelchair.
In 2006, I paid for some private physiotherapy which was successful and led to rehabilitation at St. Mary’s Hospital in Leeds. I was an in-patient for two weeks.
I have been to St.Mary’s many times and can now get myself out of bed; I can also get washed and dressed and make my breakfasts at home. On good days I can leave my wheelchair in my bedroom and go to the kitchen to get my breakfast. I am able to go upstairs . In March I went to Tenerife by myself with Enable Holidays; I stayed in a hotel which I enjoyed immensely.
